ENGLISH VERSION
Listening to the latest studio release of Czech band Pandemia makes my heart rejoice. There are several reasons, the most important of which is the sound quality and mastering, because this is the thing which makes Czech metal scene inferior to the European. All of sudden, I’m listening to an album with dense and perfect sound, comparable to stars of world death metal scene, who are used to having the budget ten times higher than this band had roughly to work with.
Because the album “Feet Of Anger” is the first encounter with the band, I will not examine the past days and the former line-ups, but I will stick to the present. The album offers an individual approach to death metal of Chuck Schuldiner or Eric Rutan’s fame in the 1990s . The vocals are not the pathological death grunt, but a roaring howl of beauty that will make you feel the tension right from the start. Occasional trips to deeper vocals suit very well either and I personally vote for more frequent occurrence in the future.
The compositions offer variable and rich structures which exceed the usual pattern of “verse/chorus/solo/verse” system. There are blast-beat storms, thick riffing and even subtle solos that slow the songs down a bit and are an efficient device to prevent boredom. On the other hand, I miss a catchy chorus with clear and easy-to-follow vocals, so as the album progressed towards its end, I started getting tired a bit. However, then “Epitaph”, the track number eight comes and with its grading finale the fatigue is over.
The album is very compact in the composing sense. The individual songs source from the cliché of the genre, which are handily and tastefully developed just after you first notice them and even though I can’t say that this CD is an instrumental orgasm, the technical level of the musicians is admirable. What is actually the moist admirable is the sound, everything is readable and even the mild suppression of bass guitar fits perfectly. In other words, this recording stands out of Czech scene in all aspects and the only match that comes to my mind is the studio release of Despise, which is still left behind in direct comparison.
A nice reminder of past decade is the cover song “Unnecessarity” from legendary Czech death metal band Krabathor (the cover is actually a lot better than the original, at least when I played the original song from 15 years old cassette). Another bonus for Czech listeners are the guest vocals by Big Boss, frontman of Root, in the final track “Death Symbols”, which is little unexpected, but surprisingly perfect in the way its used here.
The conclusion is clear: if you let a talented Czech band collaborate with professionals abroad (Andy Classen in this case), it will release an album that sets standards for the whole Czech metal scene, and I would not be surprised if young Czech bands asked their amateur sound engineers to mix and master their demos just like “Feet Of Anger”
